How We Calculate True Cost-Per-Round
The price on the box is not the price you pay. The number that matters is what each round costs you delivered to your door — and that number is almost never the one in the headline.
The formula
True cost-per-round = (price + shipping + tax) ÷ rounds
Every listing on AmmoWatch is first normalized to price-per-round, so a 50-round box and a 1,000-round case compete on equal footing. But the shelf price is only the starting point — shipping and tax are what turn a ranking into a real answer.
A worked example (real data, October 2, 2026)
The cheapest 9mm Luger we're tracking right now is a Magtech 124gr FMJ steel-case 50-round box at $10.95 from AimSurplus:
$10.95 ÷ 50 rounds = $0.219 per round
Compare a 1,000-round case of Wolf 124gr FMJ at $229.00 from True Shot Ammo:
$229.00 ÷ 1,000 rounds = $0.229 per round
On shelf price alone, the Magtech wins. Now add shipping — say $12.99 on the 50-round box and $19.99 on the case (illustrative):
- Magtech: ($10.95 + $12.99) ÷ 50 = $0.479/round delivered
- Wolf: ($229.00 + $19.99) ÷ 1,000 = $0.249/round delivered
The “cheaper” listing costs nearly twice as much once it's at your door. Small boxes get eaten alive by flat-rate shipping; bulk cases absorb it. Any ranking that ignores shipping will steer you wrong on exactly the listings where the math matters most.
Why shelf-price-only rankings mislead
Most price aggregators — AmmoSeek included — rank listings by the listed price, without factoring shipping into the numbers. That's not dishonest; it's just incomplete. A $0.21/round listing with $25 shipping on 500 rounds loses to a $0.23/round listing with free shipping, and no shelf-price ranking will ever show you that.
We rank by listed price-per-round because shipping depends on your order size, your location, and the retailer's current rates — things we can't know from our side of the screen. So we show you clean per-round numbers and give you the delivered formula above to finish the math before you buy. Apply it to our listings the same way you'd apply it anywhere else.
Which retailers we track
We track established, reputable US ammunition retailers only — shops with a real storefront, real inventory, and a track record. We don't list a retailer we can't verify, and we don't pad calibers with phantom listings: every caliber on AmmoWatch has at least one real, purchasable listing, or it doesn't get a page at all.
Price history, not just prices
A price is only a deal relative to what it usually costs. Every caliber page shows the 30-day average, the 30-day low, and the 90-day low, plus the 30-day trend — so you can tell a genuine dip from an everyday price wearing a sale sticker. Our monthly price index rolls the same data up into a market-wide view.
Price-drop alerts
Set a target price per round on any caliber and we'll email you when a tracked listing hits it. One email per price level per day — no spam, no drip campaigns, one-click unsubscribe.
What this page can't promise
- Prices move. We check retailers several times a day, but a price can change between our check and your checkout. The retailer's page is always the final word.
- Your shipping isn't our shipping. Run the delivered formula with your actual cart before committing.
- We may earn a commission when you buy through our links — it doesn't change rankings, which are driven purely by price data. Full details in the affiliate disclosure.
